We have landed in our new city; Valencia, and have been here for exactly a year. What a change to have gone from the desolate and beautiful countryside of Northern Holland to an urban landscape in the Mediterranean. This was part of the plan.

It’s been quite an adjustment to go from living in houses for many years to an apartment right in the city centre. We got lucky with a large space and a terrace that gives us a feeling of privacy plus a small garden area. I have completely lost my interest in taking care of things, other than myself, our cat Buddy and Herman (on occasion) so plants are kept to a minimum. It amazes me that after all these years I have finally begun to truly relax and let go of being busy, taking care of a home and finding ways to fill my days. I meet friends for coffee or lunch, go to the beach, swim my thirty plus laps at a local pool and have just began riding a bike throughout the city.
We are in a cool, hip neighbourhood called Ruzafa, with a school right next door. We hear the kids playing outside during the week and in the evenings there are many small bars and restaurants that open downstairs if we want a quick drink or an evening with friends.
For now, I am teaching by request only and so far have taught Thai, Indian and Mediterranean classes. Zoom is still a part of my life and it’s been interesting to adjust to teaching online. I like it but prefer the contact with my students and enjoying the meal together.

Covid update; we are all vaccinated and still wear masks indoors and are required to show a certificate when we travel. It seems that Spain has a high level of vaccinated people and everyone follow the rules. We thank god, we don’t have to deal with the mess that is going on in the states with people refusing the vaccine and acting recklessly. What a shame to see my former home fall into the abyss. I fear it won’t be a pretty picture if things continue as they are now.

To be continued, who knows where all this will lead but for the moment we are both happy to be here and are grateful we made the life changing decision to move across the ocean. Hasta luego!
