I love this small, family run place on Venice Boulevard right across from the library in Mar Vista because it is run by a Greek woman who knows how to make a Greek salad!
After spending a month on the island of Crete three years ago I have been searching for a place that can make their signature “horiatiki” salad. But somehow here in the States we can’t ever keep it simple or authentic and mess it up by adding all manner of things such as lettuce, beets, radishes and peperoncini. Here is the description of a classic Greek salad as described by my favorite web source for all facts; Wikipedia- “Greek salad is made with pieces of tomatoes, sliced cucumbersonionfeta cheese, and olives (usually Kalamata olives, other types of olives may be used as well), typically seasoned with salt and oregano, and dressed with olive oil.”
Seems easy, no? But it is rare to find a simple salad in any restaurant even Greek ones that isn’t adulterated beyond recognition. I make it all the time but here is the perfect salad in humble little Mar Vista (which most people in LA don’t even know exists). I order mine with grilled chicken on top which they cook perfectly with olive oil and lemon as a seasoning and served warm over the perfect Greek salad. Yes they have plenty of other dishes on the menu and the place itself is a modest, casual spot with plastic trays, a drive through window and a sweet outdoor garden area to bring your own tray to so it’s not about the atmosphere. The only other item I have ordered there was their gyro – a dish of shaved lamb roasted on a vertical spit served in a sandwich with yogurt cucumber sauce (tzatziki), wrapped in pita- so yummy and delicious that you will come back for me. But not as healthy as the salad which is my standard order at Sunny Grill.

Next time you are in LA check it out.
