When shopping for ingredients it can be quite a challenge to find the right stuff especially in an area like rural Connecticut. In a large city there are many stores to chose from for ethnic foods but here we may have to look a bit harder.
I have good news, I found an excellent source for Indian spices, staples, frozen items and some fresh produce and herbs. In Middletown on Saybrook Road there is a lovely market called Indian Grocery Store (very original name, right?) and I found everything for my upcoming Indian class at White Gate Farm. They had a small but fresh selection of squash, kari leaves, cilantro and other produce. All the key spices, legumes, flours, oils and snacks were well stocked. There is a freezer section with prepared entrees and appetizers as well. I tried one of their samosas that was frozen and although not close to the homemade version found it well spiced with a delicious dough.
The owner, Bhupendra Raj is very helpful and friendly so if you go with a list and don’t know what to look for he will assist.
There is a small Indian vegetarian restaurant next door (Udupi Bhavan) which was closed the day we went for lunch but has some favorable reviews online. We found another Indian restaurant; Haveli India nearby which was very good and I would recommend checking out.
