Ouzo’s off Biscayne on 78th Street in Miami is truly a gem. With a great location right on one of the canals this cozy, mediterranean style restaurant is just like being in a taverna in Crete. The owner Liza is always there greeting and making sure everything is to your liking which is a typical Greek thing- when we were in Crete the hospitality is their claim to fame.

Anyway the food was amazing. We decided to get the combination dip platter, which included; taramosalata, tzatziki, and melitzana, which is a smoky baba ghanoush. Warm toasted pita and olives accompanied these delicious dips. Then we had grilled octopus which is very hard to get right for most restaurants since it needs to be cooked briefly or it is tough and chewy, this one was perfect with a squeeze of lemon and drizzle of olive oil- just like being back in Crete. We also ordered the lamb sausage, chicken souvlaki and Greek salad. There wasn’t one item I would do differently and the the flavors were all sublime.

This is a very simple cuisine that somehow gets messed up in most American kitchens. I would go back to Miami just to eat here again, it truly was like being in Greece.
